Patching Together a Special Day

November 15, 2013 - Jim Price
For the third consecutive year, area bands and musicians are donating their talents this weekend to raise monies and awareness for a special program that benefits young people in Blair County.

The third annual Patched Together benefit concert takes place Saturday at Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society, raising funds and awareness for Home Nursing Agency’s Healing Patch program, which provides counseling services to children and teenagers who are dealing with the loss of loved ones. With several locations locally, the Healing Patch utilizes counselors and peer groups to enable youngsters to cope with the aftermath of deaths and tragedy, and help them move forward.

The Patched Together benefit concert will begin at 2 p.m., and feature performances from a wide variety of area performers representing multiple musical genres. Included will be Mama Corn (modern folk/bluegrass), Jim Donovan and the Sun King Warriors (worldbeat/rhythmic), Cottonmouth (southern rock), Nobody's Heroes (cowpunk/Americana), Lies, Inc. (hard rock/metal), The Hawks Blues Band (blues), The Pure Cane Sugar (acoustic folk/country), Chris V and the Stanley Street Band (modern rock/funk/improvisational), and the Overtones (oldies/classic rock); all performing on the main stage. (One previously advertised group, Clearfield County-based hard country band DirtKicker, had to withdraw from the bill; Lies, Inc. replaces them.) On a second stage, the Backyard Rockers and G-Street will perform acoustic sounds between main stage acts. There will also be a collaboration of area musicians, The Benefit Band, that will perform a locally written and composed song for the benefit called “Patched Together” at some point during the concert as well.

In addition to the music, there will be children’s activities, gift baskets and other door prizes, 50/50s and other giveaways. Food and refreshments will also be available.

Donation at the door will be $5 per person. Children ages 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by parent or guardian. Anybody who purchases a 2013 commemorative Patched Together T-shirt before the show is admitted free.

The Bavarian Aid Society is located at 112 South 13th Street.

Area favorites and rising bands and performers populate the stages, so support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
