Fest of Fall Fests This Weekend!

October 4, 2013 - Jim Price
As the calendar turns the corner into October, fall festival season continues to heat up in the region, with several prominent annual festivals swinging into full action this weekend. Live music is a part of each.

Cresson’s annual fall celebration, the Cresson Area Heritage Days, takes place Friday night, Saturday and Sunday afternoons; and will feature live music, a car show, children’s activities, art and craft vendors, and a variety of food and refreshments. The annual “Hobo Dinner” kicks off Friday’s proceedings with live music by local country favorite Clay Bowser. Saturday’s festival activities start at 11 a.m.; popular one-man show performer Zupe performs starting at 11:30 a.m., and Johnstown-based Johnny and June Carter Cash tribute group Ole 97 entertains starting at 2:30 p.m. Sunday’s entertainment includes local Celtic rock favorites Full Kilt at 11:30 a.m., and Elvis Presley impersonator Brad Crum starting at 2:30 p.m. Admission to Cresson Area Heritage Days is free.

Bedford’s annual two-weekend Fall Foliage Festival starts this weekend throughout downtown Bedford, with multiple art and craft vendors, food vendors and stands, and full slates of live musical entertainment on two stages both Saturday and Sunday. A number of Pittsburgh-based performers comprise much of this weekend’s musical menu at the festival. Saturday’s musical slate includes Pittsburgh-based Pink Floyd tribute Pink Noise on the downtown Gazebo stage at 12 noon, Pittsburgh jazz singer Etta Cox on the Gazebo stage at 3 p.m., Pittsburgh’s Mike Sheer Band at 10 a.m. and 12 noon on the river stage, and Maryland-based beach music group the Beach Bumz on the river stage with performances at 2 and 4 p.m. On Sunday, Pittsburgh swing band Dr. Zoot performs on the Gazebo stage at 12 noon, while former Houserockers guitarist Bill Toms and his current group Hard Rain entertain at 3 p.m. Down on the river stage, Pittsburgh variety group The Soiree Band performs shows at 2 and 4 p.m. Local folk/bluegrass favorites the Blue Shades perform at the festival both days; playing the Gazebo stage on Saturday morning, the river stage on Sunday morning, and strolling and performing throughout the festival during the remainder of its first two days. Admission to the festival is free. Parking near the festival is limited; parking with shuttle bus transportation to and from the festival is available from the Bedford County Fairgrounds and Old Bedford Village for a $7 fee per car.

And Prince Gallitzin State Park’s beach area comes alive on Sunday with the annual Apple Cider Festival. The festival runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with multiple arts and crafts vendors, apple cider pressing, food vendors, and live music from Johnstown-based Celtic rock favorites Tree and Johnstown-based oldies performers Cruzin. Admission to the festival is free, but there is a donation collected for parking.

There are lots of performers and shows to check out, so support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
