Live Music Transitions into Fall...
September 7, 2013 - Jim Price
As the first hints of “autumn crisp” arrive in the late summer nighttime air, the live music scene continues its transition from summer into autumn with more seasonal festivals, fairs and performances this weekend and upcoming week.
Making its debut this weekend is the inaugural Northern Appalachian Folk Festival in Indiana. The festivities began on Thursday night, and the event continues through Saturday with a full slate of live musical performers – including renowned folk singer, activist and State College native Si Kahn on Saturday evening. Friday’s and Saturday’s music will take place on the outdoor stage at the corner of 6th and Philadelphia Streets in Indiana. Admission is free.
Altoona’s Lakemont Park presents The Festival this Friday and Saturday. Formerly the Altoona First Festival (and Keystone Country Festival), The Festival features arts and crafts, a variety of food items, and live musical entertainment. Saturday’s performers include Johnstown-based blues, folk and Americana artists the Southside Strays beginning at 11 a.m., and longtime vintage rock’n’roll favorites the Fabulous Flashbacks starting at 4 p.m. Sunday’s entertainment includes State College based country rockers AC Express starting at 1 p.m. Admission to The Festival is $5 per person.
Summer fair action continues in the coming week, with the annual Cookport Fair starting on Monday. Located near the Indiana/Cambria County border just north of Northern Cambria, the Cookport Fair features a variety of country, gospel and rock’n’roll performers each day.
The 82nd annual Sinking Valley Fair takes place Tuesday through Saturday at the Sinking Valley Fairgrounds near Skelp in northern Blair County. This fair will feature musical entertainment spanning gospel, country, rock’n’roll and even Celtic flavors. Admission and parking are free.
Two summertime events present their final chapters on Wednesday evening. The Blair County Community Action Agency concludes their “Summer in the City” concert series with their Patriot Day concert at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza on Wednesday, commemorating the events of September 11, 2001. The concert will feature performances by Flight 19, Big Mac & the Fries and Nobody’s Heroes. Admission is free, and food and refreshments will be available for purchase. Meanwhile, across the railroad tracks, Altoona’s Railroaders Museum will present its final WingDay Wednesday event, with Born and the Beanstalk and The Sitch providing the musical backdrop to munch on hot chicken wings from area restaurants. Admission is free.
There are lots of performers and shows to check out, so support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
