End of Summer Jamming!

August 24, 2013 - Jim Price
With the start of school just days away, live music’s summer season enters its homestretch, with several summer-ending milestone concerts taking place this weekend.

The inaugural Route 22 Rock and Blues Music Festival takes place on Friday night and Saturday at the Lincoln Caverns Amphitheater near Huntingdon, and will feature a wide variety of rock, blues and acoustic acts. Friday evening’s music starts at 5 p.m., and Saturday’s music begins at noon. Some of Friday’s performers include improvisational solo performer Rich Edmundson, young punk rockers GG & the Assassins, The Hawks Blues Band, Black Sun and visual metal rockers SamarA. Saturday’s slate includes the debut performance of The Dashing Saboteurs, Claysburg-based solo performer Drew Dodson, blues trio the Rhythm Sharks (in their next-to-last performance), progressive female-fronted rockers Lies Inc., Huntingdon acoustic duo Strait & Miller, visceral Altoona-based modern rockers Hate Grenade, heavy metal performers NailDriver, young indie rockers Klockwick, Centre County metal rockers It Is Written and Williamsburg metal specialists Assault Method.

Bluegrass fans can experience Pickin’ for Wishes, a bluegrass music festival taking place on Saturday afternoon at the Cresson Sportsmen’s Club, with proceeds benefiting the Make A Wish Foundation of Western Pennsylvania. Morgantown, West Virginia-based favorites The Hillbilly Gypsies will perform their fast-paced brand of bluegrass; also appearing are the Blue Shades, Trains Moonshine & Jesus, Mountain Therapy and Matt Bartin & the Dixie Travelers. The festival begins at 12 noon. Advance tickets are $10; donation at the gate is $15.

Also at the Cresson Sportsmen’s Club, the Kids Come First Benefit: 22nd End Of Summer Jam concert will take place on Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m., with proceeds benefiting Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The Backyard Rockers will kick off the area’s longest-running annual benefit concert; also performing will be Josh Gallagher, Iron Wolf, Ryan Long, Rhythm Sharks (final performance), Rich Edmundson, Untyed, Emberstitch, Punk Fiction, Ghostown Revelry, Lies Inc. and Locked & Loaded. Donations at the gate are $10 per person, with children 12 and under admitted free when accompanied with a parent or guardian.

PMac Productions presents a Blues and Roots Festival on Saturday afternoon at Wagon Wheel Amphitheater in Philipsburg. The concert starts at 3 p.m., and will feature performances from Felix & the Hurricanes, Eric McCrum, Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats, Tyne & the Fastlyne.

There are lots of performers and shows to check out, so support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
