Candlelight Red, Striking Chords, Wednesday Wings and G.D. Gallows!

June 7, 2013 - Jim Price
This weekend and upcoming week provide several noteworthy events and lots of performers gracing area stage, both outside and inside.

Candlelight Red started their journey five years ago as a female-fronted regional “supergroup” merging former members of Backstreet Law and Stept On, and one of their first shows was at Pellegrine’s. The group underwent growing pains over the next few years; guitarist Jeremy Edge remains lone remaining founding member, flanked by former Backstreet Law bandmate and bassist Jamie Morral, singer Ryan Hoke and drummer Brian Dugan. They are now signed with indie label Imagen Records, touring nationally with names like Sevendust and Lacuna Coil, and are about to issue a new EP, “Reclamation,” produced by Sevendust drummer Morgan Rose. Candlelight Red’s tour swings through Pellegrine’s this Friday night, with special local band guests Brand New Wings and Saving Jake. The show starts 9 p.m. Advance tickets are $8, and can be purchased at Pellegrine’s until 4 p.m. Friday. (By the way, following this show, Candlelight Red heads to Michigan to perform with Trapt on Saturday, and with Theory Of a Deadman on Sunday.)

The second annual “Striking Chords Against Cancer” benefit concert will take place on Saturday at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum, raising money for the American Cancer Society. The gates open at 2 p.m. with the music starting at 2:30. This concert will mix area bands and solo performers; appearing will be Travis Singer, 7th Gear (with new frontlady Ashley Thompson), Matt Wagner, The Hope Fallacy, Jackson Monsour, Pistol Peg & the Beer Kegs, Ryan Matthew, Flight 19, Drew Dodson and Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band. Tickets are $10, and advance tickets are available at the Railroaders Museum and the Altoona Giant Eagle.

Aldo’s will present an exciting under-the-radar band on Saturday night. From Michigan, Goddamn Gallows has forged their own distinctive brand of high-energy roots-based music since their formation in 2004. Describing their genre as “gutterbilly,” the group has built a fan base with a lively and unpredictable live show that includes instrumentation such as washboard, accordion, banjo, upright bass and more. They will be performing in support of their fifth studio album, and will have recordings available for sale both on CD and vinyl. Railroad City Murder Machines will open the show starting at 10:30 p.m.

And another chapter in this summer’s popular merger of chicken wings and live music commences on Wednesday evening with the advent of Wingday Wednesday at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum. The event starts at 5:30 p.m., with area favorites Flight 19 providing the music, and tasty wings offered up by Pellegrine’s, CoBRH’s Lounge and the Belmar Hotel. Refreshments will also be available. Admission is free. Wingday Wednesday will take place on alternate Wednesdays for much of the summer; future Wingday Wednesday performers include The Felons on June 26, Kyx on July 10, Felix & the Hurricanes on July 24, Half Tempted on August 28, and Born & the Beanstalk and The Sitch on September 11.

There are lots of performers and shows to check out, so support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
