Another Belmar Anniversary; Return of a Misfit

May 10, 2013 - Jim Price
One of Altoona’s favorite eating and bar establishments marks another anniversary, an acoustic contest reaches its finals, and a former member of the Misfits returns to an area stage; all happening in the coming week on the area music scene.

Altoona’s Belmar Hotel celebrates 29 years in business with a busy weekend full of good food, festivities and live music. D.D. & the Pub Crawlers kick off the music Friday evening at 6 p.m. under the outdoor tent. Saturday under the tent, Cambria County-based country favorite Darrell Dumm kicks off music at 2 p.m., followed by Cousin Mike. Then on Saturday night, Flight 19 slams the exclamation point on the celebration with their charged dance party show starting at 10:30 p.m.

Pellegrine’s first-ever Acoustic Contest reaches its climax on Tuesday night, as six finalists – The Backyard Rockers, Left For Dead, EVK, Tuckey & Rooster, Phil Baskin and John Wolf – all vie for victory and big prizes for the top three finishers. Audience votes determine the winners, and music fans are encouraged to come cheer and vote for their favorites; all voters must pick two contestants on each ballot. The contest begins at 7 p.m. The order of the performances will be determined by luck of the draw before the start of the contest.

And former Misfits singer Michale Graves returns to Aldo’s on Thursday night to celebrate the release of his new CD, “Vagabond.” Graves, who last visited Aldo’s in October as part of former Ramones drummer Marky Ramone’s band Blitzkrieg, will perform songs off the new disc, which reflects more of his current modern folk/rock direction. Area bands Nobody’s Heroes and the Railroad City Murder Machines will kick off the evening. Admission is $5 at the door.

And on a sad note, a longtime area live music venue is no more after Friday. Citing diminishing audiences, the changing bar business and liquor law issues, Yesterday’s Party in Ebensburg is closing their doors after 18 years in business. Cambria County acoustic favorites Punk Fiction closed out live entertainment at the venue on Thursday night. For fans who have enjoyed live bands and musicians there over the years, Yesterday’s Party will be sorely missed.

Support live music this weekend! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
