Catastrophic Fun!

March 29, 2013 - Jim Price
In what should provide a good tune-up before the Reverend Horton Heat arrives on its stage in two weeks, Aldo’s Lounge brings roots-rocking fun from New York City this Friday night with the first Altoona appearance of Izzy and the Catastrophics.

Fronted by namesake Izzy Zaidman – the veteran guitarist for Wayne “The Train” Hancock’s band – the group also features the rhythm section of bassist Lucas Worford and drummer Nick Wight, plus the brass section of trombonist Chapman Sowash and tenor sax player Emiliano Vernizzi. Izzy & the Catastrophics have toured the United States and Europe since their start in 2008. They have opened for such names as Snoop Dogg and The Reverend Horton Heat, and shared stages with numerous punk, ska and rock bands.

Izzy and the Catastrophics blend elements of rock n’ roll, swing, surf, honky-tonk, and bebop into a feisty, upbeat sound that should stir dance floor excitement.

The group will embark on a European tour in mid-May, with show dates booked thus far in Germany and Italy.

Area rockers The Rik Golden Band will open Friday night’s show, which starts at 10 p.m.

In other area music happenings in the upcoming week, Pellegrine’s will present an acoustic competition starting this Tuesday night. Hosted and organized by Wednesday Open Mic/Jam Night host Adam D, the competition will start with preliminary rounds for the first two weeks, with nine different acts appearing each night. Two acts will be eliminated each night during those opening rounds, with the survivors moving on to subsequent rounds with double-act eliminations ensuing, until two surviving finalists vie for a grand prize. The admission of $3 per night entitles each audience member to one ballot to vote for their favorite acts, and audience votes will determine who moves on.

Support live music this weekend! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
