The 2013 Contest
March 27, 2013 - John Mehno
Spring is the air (if you can look past the snow) and the 2013 baseball season is about to begin.
That means it's time for the blog's annual contest to guess how many games the Pittsburgh Pirates will win.
It's this simple: You provide two numbers. The first is your prediction for how many games the Pirates will win this season. The second number is the tiebreaker, the number of home runs you think the Pirates will hit during the season. There are 162 games in the season.
You e-mail your predictions to me at: firstname.lastname@example.org. Then you sit back and wait for the announcement of the winner on Sunday, Sept. 29, right after the last game ends.
The prize, as always, is a box of leftover promotional stuff, delivered to your home by a representative of the United States Postal Service.
For frame of reference, the Pirates won 79 games last season. In the four seasons preceding that, they won 72, 57, 62 and 67 games.
Last season's home run total was 170. In the four years prior to 2012, they hit 107, 126, 125 and 153.
The contest is open now. The contest closes at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2.
One entry per person. Employees of the Mirror are not eligible. All decisions of the judges, no matter how irrational, are final. No whining.
It costs nothing to play, so give it a shot. Enjoy the season, and good luck.
