With a Little Help From My Friends...

March 8, 2013 - Jim Price
Benefit concerts again highlight this weekend’s slate of area live music happenings, as bands, musicians, fans and friends converge to help out community members in need.

Two of those benefit shows take place on Saturday. A benefit to help out breast cancer patient Krista Kyle will happen at Pellegrine’s beginning at 4 p.m. This show will feature performances from the Backyard Rockers and Pendulum, with a deejay providing music later. There will also be door prizes and giveaways, baked goods for sale and more. Donation at the door will be $5.

Another benefit show Saturday will take place at the Cresson American Legion to help out cancer patient Ted Dombrosky. The “Hug a Teddy” benefit will raise money to help with medical expenses for Dombrosky, a surgical technologist at Altoona Regional Health System who is battling liver and colon cancer. There will be live bands, a dinner, basket raffle and more. The benefit starts at 4 p.m., with dinner served at 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person or $15 per couple.

And on Sunday, a benefit will take place at 30 Something in Altoona to remember a former doorman at that venue, Cory Slick, and to raise money for an educational fund for his surviving daughter, Chelsea. Slick died in a vehicle accident near State College on February 10. He frequently worked the door at 30 Something, and was liked for his pleasant personality and sense of humor. The benefit in his memory will begin at 4 p.m., and feature performances from several area bands. Ganister with special guest “Bad Daze Rob” Carolus will kick off the music, followed by performances from Bite the Bullet, This Albatross, Left for Dead and headliners Hair Force One. Donation at the door will be $5.

Also happening this weekend, fans of the heavy metal arts can check out the impressive triple-bill at Aldo’s Saturday night; featuring local favorites NailDriver, Johnstown’s 10 Million Devils (featuring members of presently-dormant favorites The Embalmed) and Where The Truth Lies. The Flight 19 “party plane” comes in for another landing Saturday night at the 4D’s Lounge. And for those who want to relieve some tension by hitting things, Heartspace Wellness presents their “Second Sunday Drum Circle” event on Sunday afternoon starting at 2; drums and other percussion instruments will be provided, or feel free to bring your own. Admission is free, but donations are requested.

Support live music this weekend! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
