Busy Bedford Music Happenings This Weekend!

November 9, 2012 - Jim Price
A short roadtrip to Bedford will enable you to enjoy several highlights on this weekend’s live music slate.

First, the downtown Bedford Arts Center hosts the latest installment of their “Friday Night Music” series this Friday evening, with Frostburg, Maryland-based bluegrass group Frost Mountain Revival performing. Five members strong, Frost Mountain Revival plays a blend of traditional bluegrass, folk, “newgrass” and Americana-based sounds. The music starts at 7:30 p.m. Donation at the door is $5, and beverages and snacks will be available.

Three benefit events will take place in Bedford Saturday. Starting at 2 p.m., a benefit geared toward the spaying and neutering of pets will take place at the Salsa's in the old Arena building. The Fix A Pet benefit will help out local Fix-A-Pet programs, and will provide music throughout the afternoon and evening. Acoustic performers will furnish the music early, with the bands Borrowed Time, Moondog and Private I taking the stage during the evening. Food and refreshments will be available, and door prizes and gift baskets will be awarded. Advance tickets are $3, and donation at the door is $5.

Then on Saturday evening, the 9th annual Countdowns Benefit Dance will take place at the Bedford Elks. The event celebrates the memories of two prominent members of the Bedford music community, Dick and Carol Smith, and Dick’s popular band The Countdowns, which came together in 1964 and provided the launching pad for the careers of a number of current-day Bedford area musicians. Dick lost a battle with cancer in 2003, and his wife Carol started the Countdowns Benefit Dance the following year, before succumbing to cancer herself in 2008. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit Heather's Haven in honor of Heather Miller and the Bedford County Humane Society. The music starts at 5:30 p.m., and will feature performances from the current edition of The Countdowns, along with Karlee Williams & Alex Dierling, Jackson Monsour, Matt Otis, Dave Howsare featuring Emma Goldhaber, and Jamie Konicky. Advance tickets are $13 each, and can be purchased at New Hairline and Meach’s Auto Detailing in Bedford. Door prizes, food and refreshments will be available.

And The Sitch will provide the entertainment at a benefit celebrating the 263rd Anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps, taking place at the Bedford Legion. Food, raffles, door prizes and refreshments will be available. Donation is $15 per person, with the proceeds benefiting veterans and families in need. Tickets will be available at the door.

Also onstage this weekend, Aldo’s will host the first Altoona area visit of New England-based bass-punk duo Crunkwitch starting Friday night at 10:30 p.m. Comprised of the husband and wife duo of Brandon Miles and Hannah Collen, Crunk Witch has generated internet buzz and won “Best Electronic Act” at the 2011 Phoenix Awards. Crunk Witch is touring the country in support of their sophomore full-length album, “Faith in the Thief.”

Friday night also marks the onstage debut of a new regional “supergroup,” Mafia Ink, who will take the stage at The Arena in State College at 10:30 p.m. Mafia Ink features former Candlelight Red, Stept On and Badwrench bassist Adam Zimmer; former Mia Mafia frontman Brian Storm; and two former members of recently-disbanded Happy Valley party band juggernaut Shake Shake Shake, guitarist Chris Lee and drummer Justin Betz.
