PSU releases depth chart; Jones not assured to be backup QB

August 27, 2012 - Cory Giger
Penn State has released its depth chart for this week's season opener against Ohio, and perhaps the biggest surprise is that redshirt sophomore quarterback Paul Jones is not assured of being second string behind starter Matt McGloin.

The depth chart lists the backup quarterback spot as Jones or true freshman Steven Bench. Coach Bill O'Brien suggested last week that Jones was not performing up to expectations.

"Paul needs to pick it up and do better," O'Brien said then. "He's a great kid, I really enjoy coaching him. He's got to play more consistent, got to make better decisions."

Jones came to PSU as a highly rated prospect but has yet to play a down. He redshirted in 2010 and sat out all of last season because of academic issues.

The other starting spots on offense listed as up for grabs: Mike Farrell or Adam Gress at RT; Shawney Kersey or true freshman Trevor Williams at WR; Alex Kenney or Evan Lewis at WR.

On defense: Redshirt freshman Deion Barnes or Pete Massaro at DE; DaQuan Jones or James Terry at DT; Stephen Obeng-Agyapong or Jake Fagnano at safety.

Alex Butterworth won the punting job over Matt Marcincin, while Sam Ficken is the place-kicker.

The punt and kickoff returner positions are listed as TBA.
