Summer Fests and a Summer Siege!

August 10, 2012 - Jim Price
More summer festivals and some noteworthy concert events will provide highlights on the area’s live music scene during this weekend and upcoming week.

Portage’s annual Summerfest celebration takes place this weekend at Crichton-McCormick Park in Portage. Summerfest will feature plentiful food and activities, fireworks and a diverse slate of musical entertainment as well. The official Summerfest kickoff party will happen Friday night at the Cassandra Firehall, as Johnstown horn rock favorites The Flood City Brass will perform beginning at 8 p.m.; admission is $10. Saturday’s Summerfest musical entertainment will feature solo artist John Stiffler beginning at 1 p.m., Pittsburgh country favorites Broken Spoke at 3 p.m., and area classic rock favorites The Boomers lead up to the fireworks beginning at 6 p.m. Get your polka on to start Sunday when the Jerry Intihar Band takes the stage at 10 a.m. Classic rockers Ruff Tymes hit the stage at 12 noon, Elvis impersonator Phil McCaulley performs at 2 p.m., acoustic performer Jim Koban plays at 3 p.m., and oldies complete the Summerfest music as Johnstown favorites The Conniptions and Chuck Blasko & the Vogues perform starting at 5:30 p.m.

The annual Shade-Central City Heritage Festival also takes place from Friday night through Sunday afternoon at Shade-Central City Community Park. This festival will feature games and activities, ethnic foods, fireworks and live music. Oldies specialists The Runaways will perform Friday evening at the Shade-Central City VFW. Saturday’s musical schedule includes classic rockers Orange Fire starting at noon, Johnstown Celtic folk/rock favorites Tree at 2:30 p.m., and Flood City Brass bringing more horn rock sounds at 7 p.m. And polka closes out the festival’s music on Sunday with The Crescendos beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Some noteworthy indoor rock concert events will take place during the next few days. Ebensburg’s Castle Pub will host its first-ever Summer Siege event on Saturday evening starting at 5:30 p.m. This show will feature music from six different local and traveling rock bands. Cambria County acoustic rockers Punk Fiction start things off at 5:30 p.m., followed by former Marauders bassist Chris Lawson and his current band project, Nobody’s Heroes. Altoona’s Rain Must Fall is a late addition to the bill, replacing Long Island, New York rockers Revel 9 following the death of their guitar player, Matt Dower, last month. Williamsport-based heavy rockers 44Mag will then make their first appearance on the Castle Pub stage, followed by Roanoke, Virginia’s Madrone and Wellsboro-based female-fronted heavy rockers Burden My Surrender, who have twice performed as part of the Vans Warped Tour.

Aldo’s will host the return of former Misfits singer/guitarist Michale Graves this Thursday night, August 16. Graves first visited Aldo’s last year, performing a solo acoustic show. Graves returns with his full group this time, and will perform his own original compositions, including some of the tunes he created while with the Misfits. The show will also feature performances from Pittsburgh punk rockers The Cheats, plus Altoona’s Xs For Eyes and Railroad City Murder Machines. The music will start at 9:30 p.m.

And if you want to fuel up for the Michale Graves show at Aldo’s, bear in mind that the finales of both Blair County Thursday wing events, the Legion Park Wing Festival and Lakemont Park WingOffs, happen this week. And the latest installment of Hollidaysburg’s Downtown Live! takes place this Thursday as well.
