Color of B&W, 11x17 max. Those selected will be exhibited throughout the community center for a year. ~ JUNK RETHUNK ~ The Bedford County Arts Council will exhibit works by those who see the artistic possibilities in trash--plastic bottles, cans, old toys, magazines, scraps of wood and metal, innards of broken electronic equipment and the like. Come see for yourself how, with a little imagination and effort, most anything can be repurposed into appealing, unusual, and even provocative works of art.
The exhibit will be on display at the Arts Center April 1-28. The public is invited to meet the artists and exhibit sponsor Linda Gunn at a reception 1-3 p.m. Sunday, April 1 (April Fools Day, appropriately enough).
Of course artists, often prone to periods of poverty, have been upcycling "junque" for millennia. Only now it's a very trendy and "green" thing to do. What's more, it's also a morally responsible thing to do. And above all, it's fun.
Canadian life coach and counselor Lianne Snow uses plastic bottles and aluminum soda can tabs to make lovely jewelry and even a gown. Virginia artist Sandhi Schimmel Gold uses magazines, letters, and junk mail to create stunning mosaic portraits.
Closer to home, retired teacher and writer Mike Herncane for years has been making holiday figurines from newspapers, discarded aluminum foil, wood scraps, cans and bottles, and anything else he can find in the trash.
"It's good therapy and it's fun," noted Herncane, who lately has been fashioning "Green Man" and sun garden plaques from plastic milk jugs, aluminum cans, and five gallon bucket lids.
Having developed something of a zombie fetish, Herncane decided to make one. "He's about three feet tall and lives in the corner of my living room. He's scared the hell out of a few unwary visitors." They will both be at the exhibit.
