Steelers in the NFL opener?

February 29, 2012 - John Mehno
There's speculation that the Steelers could play the Super Bowl champion New York Giants in New Jersey for the NFL season opener on Sept. 5.

The schedule is still being developed, but we know this much:

--The Giants will definitely have the opening game of the season because they're the defending champions.

--The Steelers and Giants have a long history and close relationship as NFL pioneers and family-owned businesses. How do you think Rooney Mara got her name?

--The NFL likes to get the Steelers on TV because of their national fan base.

--The Steelers are definitely on the schedule for a road game against the Giants.

The full schedule will be announced in April, although news of the opener could be released earlier.

It's possible the NFL will assign a NFC East rival like Philadelphia or Dallas for the game, but having the Steelers as the opening night opponent is a real possibility.
