While the Music-a-Holic Is Away...

February 17, 2012 - Jim Price
This weekend has been circled on my calendar since…well, last year at this time!

The music industry will converge on Harrisburg this weekend for the 16th annual Millennium Music Conference, which runs from Thursday through Sunday. The conference itself will happen at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel and Convention Center in Camp Hill, and feature two days of music business panels, seminars, keynotes, a trade show, networking and more. Showcases will take place throughout the Harrisburg area, as close to 300 different bands and performers from Pennsylvania, surrounding states and beyond will share their music on various stages.

As in past years, your Altoona Mirror music-a-holic blogger will be in attendance at Millennium, and will try to post updates as schedule and hotel internet access permit.

But while yours truly will be away, the live music will continue to play on this area’s stages throughout the weekend.

Two benefits are among the highlights of this weekend’s local music scene action. On Friday night, popular area bands Half Tempted and Ganister join forces to help out local cancer patient Kevan Gochnour with a special benefit show at 30 Something. The show starts at 10 p.m., and the donation of $5 at the door will help out Kevan with his medical expenses.

Penn State Altoona’s Christian Student Fellowship is presenting “Love Out Loud” (L.O.L.), a benefit concert to raise funds and awareness toward Love 146, a national nonprofit organization working toward the abolition of child sex slavery and exploitation worldwide. The concert will take place at Penn State Altoona’s Adler Gymnasium Saturday evening starting at 7:30 p.m., and feature performances by Penn State Altoona-based band In Remembrance Of Me, Greensburg-based band Arson In The Suburbs and Altoona favorites Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band. Ticket prices are $5 for Penn State students, and $10 for the general public. Door prizes and gift baskets will be available.

If you want to mix the pleasure of live music with hopes for the upcoming outdoor season, the annual Alleghenies Adventure Outdoor Show at the Blair County Convention Center will feature “Deer N Beer” performances from The House Band on Friday evening and Felix & the Hurricanes on Saturday evening. Both shows are from 7 to 9 p.m. Handcrafted beers and venison treats will be available during both performances. Advance tickets to the Outdoor Show are $15/person or $25/couple; admission at the door is $20 per person.

The weekend will also feature a return visit from popular Harrisburg-based party band juggernaut Emily’s Toybox Friday night at the 4D’s Lounge. And Baltimore’s All Natural, featuring Nevermoure/Vs. the Earth alumni Mike Ritchey on guitar and Shawn Hocherl on drums, brings their high-powered rocking show back to Pellegrine’s on Sunday night.
