PSU QB Paul Jones academically ineligible for 2011 season
July 29, 2011 - Cory Giger
Redshirt freshman quarterback Paul Jones will be ineligible to play this season for Penn State because of academic issues, Joe Paterno told reporters Friday morning at Big Ten media days in Chicago.
JoePa was asked if Jones would be able to play and replied, "I don't think so."
Sophomore Rob Bolden and junior Matt McGloin will be competing for the Nittany Lions' starting quarterback job. Jones was expected to be the third-stringer, but now juniors Kevin Newsome and Shane McGregor, a former a walk-on from Central Cambria High School, will compete for that spot.
Paterno said several times last year that Jones was having academic problems, which played a role in him redshirting.
Jones graduated a semester early from Sto-Rox High School near Pittsburgh and enrolled at Penn State in January of 2010 hoping to compete for the starting quarterback job. He excelled in the Blue-White Game last year, leading some to believe he might be ready to take over the position, but he eventually lost out to another true freshman in Bolden.
Jones was a five-star recruit and the No. 3 prep quarterback in the country coming out of high school, according to Scout.com.
