Ridge runners need your help!
July 22, 2011 - Erik Brown
One of the reasons I write this blog is to promote our sport and one way you do that is by encouraging young people to become runners. Well, an opportunity to do just that has presented itself to me, and though it's a bit of a last minute thing, here goes...
The Chestnut Ridge School District recently made a decision to cut several sports teams due to budgetary concerns. Their varsity cross country team is one of the teams cut, but the team's booster club isn't giving up without a fight.
According to Chestnut Ridge Cross Country Boosters club president Lisa Farnan, they have already come up with 80 percent of the money needed to cover travel expenses and race fees and are asking the district for the rest.
Acting superintendent Amy Miller said the board hasn't made a decision to contribute the remaining 20 percent, but if the money is raised they'll allow the team to keep the Chestnut Ridge name.
The CRXC Boosters club is getting the community involved. They've planned a Ridge Runner's 1st Annual Alligator 5K Run for tomorrow morning (Saturday, July 23rd) at 8:00 AM.
This 5K race will take place at Shawnee State Park in Schellsburg, PA along the park's beautiful Lakeshore Trail. If you go, you'll want to park at the boat rental lot and follow the balloons to Pavilion 2.
Registration on the day of the race is $20 at Pavilion 2. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Chestnut Ridge Cross Country Team. The first 100 registrants will receive a T-shirt, and there will be awards for the top three male and female finishers - overall and in each age group.
I hope some of my readers will be able to make the last minute decision to toe the starting line. But if you can't make it, please consider making a donation payable to the Chestnut Ridge Cross Country Boosters at 227 Beaver Lane, New Paris, PA 15554.
