What a mess
June 9, 2011 - John Mehno
Old friend Bob Hertzel has been covering sports since 1964.
He's worked in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, New York and is now based in Morgantown, covering West Virginia University sports for a syndicate of newspapers.
He says in all his years, which includes extensive experience covering the NFL and MLB, he's never seen a situation as messed up as the current circumstances with the WVU football program. First-year athletic director Oliver Luck hired Dana Holgorsen as offensive coordinator and head coach in waiting while current head coach Bill Stewart works his last season. So you have staff loyalties divided, you have Holgorsen getting into some trouble off the field, and you have allegations that Stewart was leaking stories designed to show Holgorsen in a bad light.
Hard to imagine a situation more ridiculous than that.
