Postcards from Florida: Thoughts on Sandusky and the Pirates
March 31, 2011 - Cory Giger
I spent most of Thursday disappointed and disgusted about the Jerry Sandusky news that can be found on the front page of our website and on A1 in Friday's paper.
These postcards, I'm told, are supposed to be a fun and lighthearted read, but nothing about my day felt fun after making calls and talking to all sorts of people about the allegations against the former Penn State assistant coach -- allegations we've known about for a while at the Mirror but were unable to get sources to discuss on the record.
None of the former Nittany Lion players I contacted Thursday wanted to talk about the situation publicly, which is understandable.
Today will be better -- because it's opening day for the Pirates! This is the one day of the year when it's guaranteed the Buccos will not be in last place and we can just enjoy watching the game knowing nothing has gone wrong yet. Then Saturday will roll around and, well, you know.
My prediction for the Pirates this season is 69-93, which would be a 12-game improvement from last year's 105 losses. If they can improve that much -- 12 games is tough to do from one year to the next -- and perhaps get it down to 88 losses next year, then maybe in 2013 they'll finally be able to end their 20-year losing streak.
