Fire Hurts

I can't imagine losing my home and possessions to a fire. How would you even start to rebuild? Dozens of families in the area face that each year, though. The local chapter of the Red Cross is calling attention to the devastation home fires cause in its Fire Hurts campaign. See Kristy MacKaben's story on A1 today.

Dozens of junior high students from across Blair County are in Altoona for the junior high county band. There's a concert tonight at Altoona Area Junior High School. See Gary Baranec's photo on A2 for more information.

Boscov's is calling atttention to the fight against heart disease with events on Thursday at the Logan Town Centre store. They're holding blood pressure screenings and stroke risk assessments along with offering fitness and healthy cooking demos. The ad on A3 has more information, including a Valentine dinner promotion sponsored by Boscov's and Finelli's Italian Villa.

It looks like great news for taxpayers -- Uncle Sam's take is going to be the lowest since 1950. (See the story on C1.) I haven't had my taxes done yet, but I'll keep my fingers crossed I get such good news, too!

There are sites off the coast of four Eastern states that have been identified as having potential for wind energy farms. (Story is on C3.) How do you feel about that?

Great story on D1 about the problems that plague stutterers and the misconception that because they can't get their words out easily that they are somehow less intelligent. More attention has been paid to stuttering lately, thanks to the movie "The King's Speech," which is up for 12 Oscars.
