Ice Sculptures in State College!
January 3, 2011 - Emily Dimov-Gottshall
Every New Year's Eve there is a tradition called "First Night State College". My family happened to stumble upon the earlier event of Ice Sculpting (see pics on the side). After seeing a beautiful interpretation of a Russian building, horse and sleigh and various miniature ice works located around downtown State College, we felt this was definitely something to add to our tradition.
What we didn't know is this was all part of something called "First Night". In the evening, there is a parade where children dress up in costumes, people are invited to join in the parade by holding elaborately decorated flags and large papier mache banners. Had I known, we would have stayed longer. We did have a sick child, so it was just as well we left early. Next year, hopefully, we'll be well enough to take part. What a great way to celebrate the New Year!!
I've also added some flickr pics people have taken of their experiences. What a visual feast! Now, if we could try something like this in Altoona, wouldn't that be something. :)
