Yesterday at lunchtime, I dug the last Beggin’ Strip out of the bag for Oak as his potty reward. I caught myself savoring the incredible aroma as I handed it to him, his eyes almost giddy with excitement. How could a dog treat smell so good? I know I have a secret love affair with bacon, but seriously…

When I got back to work, our friends at Nestle had written to remind me that Saturday was so much more than just the long anticipated kick off to college football - especially if you are a dog and connoisseur of all things carnivorous.

Saturday, September 4, is International Bacon Day. Yup, not kiddin’ ya’. And, according to Oakley, a day dedicated to the most fabulous meat on the planet. And, there is actually a big event taking place in Cincinnati to mark the event. I had to break the news to him that we could not make the trip. Oakley wasn’t pleased. He ate a dog bed to prove it.

However, in return I promised him (if he stopped eating dog beds) a new bag of Beggin’ Strips.  In turn, he’d like me to give away 2 coupons to my blog readers for FREE Beggin’ Strips products! (SO… thanks to Oakley and, oh, yeah, Nestle, too, YOU CAN REGISTER RIGHT HERE TO WIN FREE BEGGIN’ STRIPS PRODUCTS).

If you are able to make a trip to Cincinnati on Saturday, check out this itinerary of events for both you and your fur babies! Beggin’ is throwing a bacon-themed party hosted by Kevin Gillespie, Season 6 finalist on Bravo’s “Top Chef” known for incorporating pork into almost every signature dish. He’ll also give special cooking demonstrations using—you guessed it—bacon.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be hosting this event with Beggin’®,” said Gillespie, who is currently the co-owner and executive chef at The Woodfire Grill in his native Atlanta. “I’ll be sharing some of my favorite pork dishes with other bacon-lovers and hope to inspire them to embrace pork within their own cooking. Let’s get the party started!”

The bash will also feature live music, a bacon-eating contest sanctioned by All Pro Eating (this is for human bacon-lovers only), a bacon pet costume contest, and much more. Plus, your dog is invited to help attempt to set a new Guinness Record for the “loudest group bark.” There’s no time like Beggin’ time. And there’s no day like International Bacon Day.

“Because dogs – and their owners – share a hilarious obsession for bacon, Beggin’ wanted to create an exciting, dog-friendly event for the entire family that’s all about bacon,” said Stephen Trammell, assistant brand manager, Nestlé Purina Dog Snacks brand pet food. “There’s no better way to celebrate International Bacon Day.”

Hilarious, Stephen? I ‘beg’ to differ… I am quite serious about my bacon obsession… (I dare you to try and take a piece  from my plate….) :-P

My favorite treat memory is with my "first furry kid", Bellamy. Belle was the product of a failed relationship and I won "custody". She loved ice cream, vanilla of course (no chocolate.....bad). We would wait on my parents porch on Saturday nights for Larry's Dairy Bar, her getting so excited when she heard that familiar sound of the truck coming closer up the block. This ritual went on for a couple of years. Belle was the best, the only constant in my life in those unsettled young adult years. My mother and I sometimes talk about Bellamy, what a funny pooch she was. Bellamy has been gone for 12 years now but the happy memories are still with me.

My treat story is from some time ago with our first golden retriever. His name was Beawolf. My husband used to have those 44 oz super plastic cups that he would fill with orange juice. HE had set teh Oj down on a footstool beside him while he was playing on the computer. Beawolf at all of 6 months old picked up the glass, sat it on the floor, and drank all the Oj with out spilling a drop. When my husband reached for his glass he couldn't feel it. When he looked over there was Bea lifting his head from lapping up the last of the Oj

Amy, My doggie treat story isn't nearly as entertaining as yours, but it is short, sweet, and warms my heart. Genna's favorite treats are also Beggin Strips, although because she is such a little squirt, she gets Beggin Littles. I give her a treat every time I leave the house and she takes it; however, she doesn't eat it. As soon as I return home, she immediately runs and gets her treat and eats it. Guess she just doesn't have much of an appetite while I'm away. Awww****...
