Let the preseason begin
August 14, 2010 - Buck Frank
Some say the NFL should cut the preseason games back to two and add those two extra games to the regular season.
I like it the way it is now. To fully evaluate rookies in game situations, four games is appropriate. These games are not designed for Hines Ward and James Harrison to showcase their abilities -- they are a chance for guys like Crezdon Butler and Antonio Brown to show they belong on an NFL roster.
You can only do so many drills at camp.
--Ben Roethlisberger ran onto the Heinz Field playing surface for warm-ups at approximately 6:30 p.m. and received mostly cheers from the crowd. I wouldn't expect to hear much booing because a lot of time has passed.
If the season would have started in May, you would have heard a ton of booing.
--If I were Mike Tomlin, I would start Roethlisberger tonight against the Lions for one series and then get him out of there. That way, the anticipation of how the crowd is going to react will be done. I'd then bring in Byron Leftwich and keep him in the rest of the first half -- he needs the work. Dennis Dixon would play the entire second half.
Some guys to look out for tonight for the Steelers will be rookie receiver Emmanuel Sanders, linebacker Stevenson Sylvester and cornerback Buter. The three have been enjoying fine training camps and could be nice additions to the team.'
The biggest concern for Tomlin, though, will be to make sure no one gets injured, especially Troy Polamalu and Aaron Smith.
