A fireworks tax

July 5, 2010 - Mark Leberfinger

It sounded like the rocket's red glare or a war zone, depending on which part of Blair County you lived in the last several nights.

It happens every year around the Fourth of July with bottle rockets, firecrackers and other illegal fireworks exploding or lighting up the night sky.

A lot of money goes into the illegal fireworks, so why shouldn't the state get a share of that money instead of having Pennsylvanians play cat-and-mouse games out of state to get the illegal stuff.

Let Gov. Rendell and the General Assembly make the illegal fireworks legal but tax them. We can have fireworks year-round, and the state has a new way to fill its budget gap.

It may not make up for the possible $850 million hole in this year's state budget, if that money doesn't come from Washington, but it's a start.

What do you think?

Don't know how that would work with the local ordinances that require special permits. I heard in 2011, because the state law is so old and the fine is only $100, Logan Twp, is go start citing those setting off any fireworks with their ordinance that requires a permit for any fireworks display
