You gotta have spirit!
July 1, 2010 - Erik Brown
Imagine you’re a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan. I know, it’s not easy, but just for a moment, close your eyes and picture yourself as a Terrible Towel waving, black and gold face-painting, Bill Cowher spittle admiring, Steelers fan. Are we there yet? Yes?? OK, good! Now, ask yourself this: could there be anything worse than losing to the Baltimore Ravens? No, you don’t think so, eh? Well, what if the Baltimore Ravens weren’t called the Ravens? What if they were the Baltimore Bluebirds of Happiness? How would you feel about it then? Worse, yes?
What’s that got to do with running? Read on.
This year’s edition of the Hollidaysburg Area YMCA Community Wellness Challenge Series has a new wrinkle – Team Competition! According to the Y, the idea is to “use the buddy system to encourage more people to achieve a higher personal wellness level” - in other words, good old-fashioned peer pressure. You know what? It works! There are presently five teams battling for the coveted CWCS Team title.
Now you might think that putting together a roster loaded with fast runners would be the most important factor in fielding a top notch team for the CWCS Team competition. You would be wrong. That’s because the clever folks at the YMCA decided that the Team category should emphasize spirit – as in TEAM SPIRIT! With that in mind, they established a team scoring system that not only rewards fast feet, but also participation, and especially, TEAM SPIRIT!
Getting a team entered is pretty simple, and with five of the eight 2010 CWCS races still to come it isn’t too late to get in on the fun. You should contact Tina Skelley-Kunstbeck at the YMCA if you’re interested. Just remember, you gotta have spirit! And hurry, July 4th is just around the corner.
I don’t have the official team standings, but I’m quite sure the current leader is (and it pains me to say it), the Bluebirds of Happiness – team captain, Stewart Van Horn. There’s something about that Bluebird costume (see the photo) that says: “team spirit”.
After that, the rest of us are closely bunched.
Reliance Bank – team captain, Sue Eberhardt
The Killer B’s – team captain, yours truly
Dog Guard – team captain, Heidi Soldner
Longer Run Club – team captain, Tim Gildea A.K.A. The Pied Piper of Hollidaysburg
Blair Area Multisport (BAM) – team captain, Laura Burke (sorry no photo available)
