June 11, 2010 - Neil Rudel
Congratulate me on being dragging into the new age of technology. Here (drum roll, please) is my first tweet.
"Nebraska could be joining the Big Ten. Will Texas hook its horns to Pac-10, where star player USC has been wrecklessly out of control?"
Of course, we'll see how this (Twitter, not Texas/USC) goes, but I'll try to use it for some one-liners or tease Mirror coverage, etc, and then expand on it here or in the paper.
That's how I presume it's supposed to work and, if not, Ray Eckenrode will advise me.
I like the Big Ten's pull of Nebraska and think the Cornhuskers will strengthen the conference considerably. They're steeped in tradition and represent a institution with integrity. Anyone who has ever had the privilege of attending a game in Lincoln -- and it is a privilege -- knows the fans are as classy as they come. (And that includes Beaver Stadium).
If it can't get Notre Dame now, maybe the Big Ten ought to just pull back, rather than water itself down with the likes of Missouri, Rutgers and perhaps other additions that may blow up the Big East.
The Big Ten took Penn State in 1990 and Nebraska 20 years later. Maybe less is more for now.
In the meantime, if half the Big 12 goes to the Pac-10, it will make one super conference. But be careful what you wish for, Texas: Conference heavyweight USC has not operated with insitutional control in either football or basketball.
It's tough to be a bedfellow with someone you don't respect.
In the meantime: here are my new coordinates:
I'm figuring to at least capture my immediate family :)
