One of the good "bad guys"

March 23, 2010 - Mark Leberfinger

One of the good "bad guys" of my childhood has died.

It was sad to hear over the weekend that Baron Mikel Scicluna, part of the "Studio Wrestling" crowd on WIIC-TV, Channel 11 in Pittsburgh, had died.

I never got too excited about pro wrestling like some of my co-workers, but Baron Scicluna was one of those I watched as a kid on the old black and white Philco TV at home.

He would battle Bruno Sammartino and others, with Bill Cardille as the ever-present host of the show.

Scicluna would use trickery and foreign objects to gain the upper hand. I caught myself yelling at the TV for the ref to find the object that I could plainly see.

I knew the Baron would eventually lose in the battle of good vs. evil.

"He was a villain, but you knew when you talked to him that he was a gentleman," Cardille told The Associated Press.

Scicluna was 80.

Bill Cardille, Killer Kowalski, Bruno, the Baron, tag team matches where the bad guys pummeled the good two-on-one while the ref's back was turned attending to some other trivial matter... And Pie Traynor - "Who can? Ameri-can!"
