Arians may get Ripped
January 11, 2010 - Buck Frank
It's being reported the Steelers want to interview Rip Scherer for their open quarterbacks coaching job, left vacant when Ken Anderson quit after the season.
Scherer, a Pittsburgh native, just happens to be director of football operations Kevin Colbert's cousin, and he also hired Mike Tomlin as a graduate assistant when he was the head coach at Memphis in the late 1990s. He also is a William & Mary graduate, just like Tomlin.
Scherer would certainly bring an impressive resume to the Steelers' coaching staff -- he's been a head coach at Memphis and James Madison and has been a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for various colleges and NFL teams. He was the QBs coach with the Carolina Panthers last year. He also began his coaching career as a grad assistant under Joe Paterno at Penn State.
If you're Bruce Arians, though, what are your thoughts today? He was just given a vote of confidence by the Steelers when he was retained as offensive coordinator despite his unpopularity with Steelers fans. And now, the possibility exists of having Scherer, with all of his connections to Tomlin and Colbert, on the same staff.
Unless Arians has some ties with Scherer, this would put Arians in a doomed position. It wouldn't be ideal to have someone on his staff have such close relationships with his bosses.
But Scherer hasn't been hired yet. We'll see what happens. If the Steelers are really interested in him, though, they shouldn't have retained Arians.
