Include me out, thanks
December 30, 2009 - John Mehno
We're on the verge of the new year, the worst holiday on the calendar in my view.
It goes back to when I was a kid and Jan. 2 was back to school day. That meant all the Christmas decorations came down on Jan. 1 and went back in the attic for 11 and 1./2 months. That meant the homework assignments that I let slide when the break started on Dec. 21 were now due. That meant no major break in the school schedule until summer vacation, and too many cold and nasty mornings along that path.
If It hadn't totally soured on the holiday, Dec. 31, 1972 did it for me. Just hours after the Steelers lost a home playoff game to the perfect-season Miami Dolphins, Roberto Clemente was killed in the plane crash and things were never quite the same. There isn't a Dec. 31 or Jan. 1 when I don't think of waking up to that news on the first day of 1973.
I wish you the best in the new year, but I won't be doing anything to commemorate the passage of 2009 into 2010. Be careful out there, and let's have a good year -- just as soon as we get past New Year's.
