They were family

August 18, 2009 - John Mehno

The Pirates released the guest list for this Saturday's reunion of the 1979 World Series team:

The players and staff taking part in the ceremony include: Chuck Tanner, Margaret Stargell (widow of Willie Stargell), Dave Parker, Omar Moreno, Phil Garner, Bert Blyleven, John Candelaria, Bill Madlock, Manny Sanguillen, Rennie Stennett, Kent Tekulve, Mike Easler, Jim Rooker, Ed Ott, Don Robinson, Grant Jackson, Bruce Kison, Lee Lacy, Steve Nicosia, Matt Alexander, Al Monchak, Dale Berra and Tony Bartirome (trainer).

Berra was with the team in 1979, but was not on the postseason roster.

Five members of the team have died: Stargell, John Milner, Bill Robinson, Dave Roberts and pitching coach Harvey Haddix.

Among those not attending, Jim Bibby has been in poor health and recently had a bone marrow transplant. His doctors don't want him to travel from Virginia. Coach Joe Lonnett is afflicted with Alzheimer's and unable to attend. Tim Foli is managing at the Class AAA level for the Washington Nationals. The latest word on Enrique Romo is he is unable to enter the United States.

REMINDER: The blog has a new contest. Check the previous entry (Awaiting the Inevitable) for details.
