More on Romo
July 29, 2009 - John Mehno
Looks like some of my Enrique Romo column note didn't make the print edition of the Mirror, so here is the complete item for you Romo-philes:
Enrique Romo was an effective relief pitcher for the Pirates in the 1979 championship season.
Since 1982, though, he’s been an international man of mystery.
Romo bailed out on the Pirates a few days before that season was over, amid rumors that his life had been threatened by a jealous husband. He returned to Mexico and never came back to Pittsburgh.
The latest edition of the bi-annual Pirates Alumni newsletter contains a couple of communications from Romo, including the news that his daughter Mary Gladys recently gave birth to twins, his first grandchildren.
Pirates alumni officials have received e-mails purportedly from Romo, all in Spanish.
There is speculation that his son may be sending the messages, but no one is certain.
The Pirates will have a 1979 reunion at PNC Park next month. Romo, 62, has been invited, but his old teammates will be surprised if he shows up.
