All the Way to Memphis
April 27, 2009 - Jim Price
Felix & the Hurricanes are headed…all the way to Memphis.
On Sunday night, the Altoona area blues-rock favorites punched their ticket to compete in next February’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis. The group won the finals of the Pittsburgh Blues Challenge at Moondogs in Blawnox (northern Pittsburgh), presented by the Blues Society of Western Pennsylvania. The group will represent western Pennsylvania in the International Blues Challenge.
The Hurricanes topped a field that included two previous winners, Erie-based Ron Yarosz & The Vehicle, and Pittsburgh’s Jill West & Blues Attack, as well as Craig King & King’s Ransom.
In addition to moving on to Memphis, Felix & the Hurricanes – lead singer/guitarist Felix Kos, bassist/singer Jeff Clapper and drummer Bob Watters – won a $1,000 cash prize, and will perform at the annual Pittsburgh Blues Festival on July 25.
Other winners crowned on Sunday night included Bubs McKeg and Dr. Blue in the solo/duo division, and Dr. Blue won the Seydel Award.
The International Blues Challenge was started by The Blues Foundation in 1985 to find the best unsigned blues bands, soloists and duos in the world. The competition begins with some 160 different regional competitions by the Foundation’s affiliated organizations throughout the world. The winners of the regional competitions head to Memphis to face off in the finals, held on historic Beale Street, for cash, prizes, and a date with career destiny.
