April 7, 2009 - John Mehno
Thanks to everyone who entered the contest to guess how many games the Pirates will win. I'm still sorting out some of the duplicate entries, but there's a wide range. The high number is 102 and the low is 62. Just about everything in between has been taken.
Good thing the Pirates won the opener. They play 162 games a season, but none gets more attention than the opener. It's amazing how many people base their opinions solely off what they see in one game. And it's never the June 19 game, it's always the opener.
That's why some knucklehead called a talk show last night to suggest that the Pirates get rid of Andy LaRoche (two errors) at third base and replace him with Pedro Alvarez, who hasn't played an inning of professional baseball. Good or bad, it's just one game. Try to wait at least a week before launching a really good panic.
