Forget style points: PSU is winning
February 19, 2009 - Neil Rudel
Did Penn State beat Illinois 38-33 or was that the score at halftime?
Yes, the Nittany Lions won and in doing so may have negated their three-game losing streak that interrupted midseason momentum. Winning in Champaign -- it wasn't impressive, but it is impressive that the Lions have won there three straight years -- puts Penn State (19-8 overall, 8-6 in the Big Ten) squarely back in NCAA Tournament consideration.
The Lions needed at least one road win, at Illinois or Ohio State on Tuesday, to overcome the home loss to Wisconsin. Now they've gotten that, even it was by a junior high school score.
No doubt the national pundits will have a field day with the lack of offense in the Big Ten, and it will be curious how the NCAA Tournament committee takes it.
Michigan State led Michigan at halftime 23-15 earlier this year.
Purdue beat Iowa 49-45.
And now this.
But Penn State can't be picky, and it won't be.
As Al Davis says, "Just Win, Baby."
