Super Bowl week -- Thursday
January 29, 2009 - Buck Frank
The media just finished up their final interviews with the players.
The Steelers' media session was again held out at the University of South Florida. At this stage of the week, both the players and the media are ready for the game to begin.
Mike Tomlin and Ken Whisenhunt will hold their final press conferences Friday morning, and then access with the teams end. The NFL does not allow the media to attend practices here. Instead, they send one media representative to each practice facility, and that one person files a report to be used by all. Peter King is the pool reporter for the Steelers.
There will be other press conferences coming up. In fact, Faith Hill will be at the media center at 2 p.m., followed by The Boss.
The media center is exactly what you think it would be. About 15 long tables are set up in one room for newspaper people to work. Radio row is in another room where you can see Jim Rome doing his show live, along with many other radio people. The NFL Network guys are set up outside of the center. The are several information booths stationed in the hall, along with a media lounge. You need a credential and your bags checked before entering the building, which is actually the Tampa Convention Center.
Most of the media are staying in hotels around the media center. I have a 5-10 walk from the hotel to the center, where I can work with wireless internet and update this blog. A shuttle runs every half hour from the hotel to the media center, but with so many one-way streets in downtown Tampa, it's easier to just walk.
The forecast is calling for rain here today, but it hasn't started yet. An outdoor concert featuring Rihanna and Fall Out Boy is scheduled for tonight in the Tampa area -- not sure how the rain will affect that.
