January 14, 2009 - John Mehno
*Just heard one of the TV stations touting it has all the school closings and delays in high definition. Yes, that's the reason to sink money in a new set.
*Anyway, there was a great moment in Mike Tomlin's Tuesday press briefing. Someone mentioned to him that several players have commented on how much he's improved as a coach. Tomlin has a pretty good poker face, but he was clearly annoyed with the question.
No. 1, you don't expect a coach to get reflective when he's preparing for a conference championship game. There aren't enough minutes in the hours leading up to Sunday, and a coach's obligations to media availability increase during the week of a championship game. The coaches want to do their duty, then get back to work. I don't know if Tomlin sits back and evaluates his decisions and strategies. But if he does, I'm reasonably sure that self-examination won't come at a press conference. Then the question also presumes that Tomlin was flawed in his first year as a coach, and that's at least a little insulting.
So Tomlin shot the whole thing down and made it clear he didn't think much of the question. He suffered that lame Santa Claus bit a few weeks ago with more patience.
*Two more things as we grind closer to Sunday's kickoff: I don't know who's going to win, and I don't have any connections for tickets to any game. Sorry on both counts.
*Hey, the Pirates announced their promotional schedule today. It's the usual assortment of bobbleheads, fireworks, caps and musical acts that make you say, "I didn't know they were still alive." After 16 losing seasons, some people aren't buying tickets unless you give them patio furniture.
