November 26, 2008 - John Mehno
I've written this in the Mirror before, but I really believe Thanksgiving might be the best national holiday of all.
It's all-inclusive regardless of faith, it doesn't require a lot of spending, and it's always on Thursday, which makes for a nice long weekend for most working people (My sympathies to those who work in retail and have to be on the job extra early for Friday's madness). It features the great American traditions of football and gluttony, and we've thankfully not gotten to the point where any radio station has suspended its regular format to play wall-to-wall Thanksgiving songs.
It's a great chance to take stock of our lives and appreciate all the good things. I have a partial list of my own in Wednesday's Mirror column, but there are many, many more. Here's another: Even though I'm likely to be up at 5 a.m. on Friday, I'll be home and nowhere near a retailer who's running a loss leader special on some electronics item.
Hope you get to spend the day with family and friends and have a great time.
