Live from Heinz Field

October 26, 2008 - Buck Frank

Third-quarter report:

The Steelers were able to get the big play from the passing game with Nate Washington getting deep for a 65-yard score. He also caught another one from 53 yards, but it was called back due to a penalty. Washington, the former free-agent pickup from Tiffin, has become a legitimate deep threat for the Steelers. (He also had long TD receptions in previous games against the Bengals and Jaguars).

Mewelde Moore is close to 100 yards, and the Steelers may need him to run off the clock here in the fourth quarter.

Halftime report:

A youth football game being staged at halftime already has produced more offensive excitement than the first half of the Steelers-Giants game.

The Giants seem to be the more physical team right now and kept the ball in the Steelers' end of the field nearly the entire first half. It's pretty remarkable the Steelers only trail, 9-7. A big goal-line stand where the Steelers were helped by a couple of challenges that went their way is the big reason the score isn't worse right now.

The Steelers' Mewelde Moore has been running the ball well, but they're going to need to break a big pass play at some point. Nate Washington had a couple of chances but didn't produce. They miss Santonio Holmes.

The Steelers may be getting worn down on defense. We'll see.

Five minutes until kickoff:

Aaron Smith was announced with the rest of the starting defensive unit.

Press box sighting: Legendary college basketball coach Bob Knight, who is scheduled to speak at Penn State Monday night, is taking in the game.

Looks like it's gong to be a nice day for football, although a bit breezy.

10 minutes until kickoff:

It appears as though DE Aaron Smith is going to play. He missed practice all week for personal reasons, but he is not on the team's inactive list for today's game against the Giants.

Four starters, though -- WR Santonio Holmes, RB Willie Parker, CB Bryant McFadden and OT Marvel Smith -- will not dress.

Nose tackle Casey Hampton returns to the lineup along with fullback Carey Davis.

The Giants are not starting Plaxico Burress in his return to Pittsburgh, but he is dressing for the game.

The Giants are going with veteran kicker John Carney. Lawrence Tynes was a game-day decision and won't kick.

The only other notable absentee for the Giants is linebacker Gerris Wilkinson, and Bryan Kehl will start in his place.
