The NFL can't match this

September 26, 2008 - Buck Frank

The parity in the NFL is what makes it the king of sports in the U.S. On any given day, a team can rise up and knock off one of the better teams. I've always preferred the NFL over the college game and still do.

However, what happened in college football Thursday night just doesn't happen in the NFL. You have a team, Oregon State, that was hammered by Penn State and not even close to sniffing any of the polls, upsetting the No. 1 team in the nation, USC. You have a crowd of students storming the field. That kind of excitement, and ditto the Appalachian State upset last year, can't be matched by the NFL.

Last week, the 0-2 Dolphins upset the 2-0 Patriots in New England. That's one of the biggest upsets you could have in the NFL. Yet, although surprising, it still wasn't shocking. Again, that's what makes the NFL what it is, but the league is not going to get the same kind of excitement out of monumental upsets as the Oregon State-USC game did Thursday.

Now, if only the college game could adopt that playoff format ....
