One week to go...

September 24, 2008 - John Mehno

You may recall April's first-ever blog contest in which readers were invited to predict how many games the Pirates would win this season.

Turns out a lot of people were far too optimistic and have already been eliminated. There are a handful of entrants still alive. The season ends Sunday in San Diego, and the announcement of the winner will appear in this space Sunday night. In case you've forgotten, the winner will receive a box of Pirates' promotional junk stuff, mailed directly to them. I don't want to spoil the surprise, but the winner should clear some prime shelf space for at least one bobblehead. NO fireworks will be sent, per Postal regulations.

Meanwhile, the Steelers have a major challenge Monday night, playing Baltimore at Heinz Field without Willie Parker and Casey Hampton. Rookie Rashard Mendenhall had better secure the ball with both hands, because you can bet the opportunistic Ravens defense will be trying to pry it loose on every run.

Maybe a couple of Velcro strips are the answer?

CONTEST UPDATE: The Pirates head into the final three games with 65 wins. So the numbers still in play are 65, 66, 67 and 68.

CONTEST UPDATE, Saturday, Sept. 27: With Friday night's win in San Diego, the Pirates are 66-94. That means the following numbers are still in play for the contest: 66, 67 and 68.

CONTEST UPDATE, Sunday Sept. 28: OK, the Pirates lost Saturday night, so they're 66-95. That means we're down to two numbers -- 66 and 67. We have single entrants with both numbers. That means one person will have been exactly correct in guessing the Pirates' record. Watch this space Sunday evening for the announcement of the winner.
