August 27, 2008 - John Mehno
The Pirates are having a hard time establishing contact with Pedro Alvarez, their No. 1 draft pick who agreed to a $6 million signing bonus.
Some suspect his absence is just more gamesmanship from agent Scott Boras, but there's nothing to be gained by keeping Alvarez away from the Pirates.
He has yet to take his physical and, contrary to some reports, the Pirates haven't paid a dime of his bonus yet since he hasn't signed his contract.
Makes you wonder if there isn't something wrong with Alvarez, and that's what's making him so shy about meeting his employers.
UPDATE: Well, there is something wrong. Boras is apparently trying to claim the Pirates did not reach agreement with Alvarez before the midnight deadline on Aug. 15. This is apparently tied to a demand to renegotiate the agreement.
The Pirates' response has been swift and stern.
