Pirates update -- Alvarez signs
August 16, 2008 - John Mehno
It probably happened too late to make Saturday's print edition of the Mirror, but the Pirates announced the signing of first-round draft pick Pedro Alvarez around 12:40 a.m.
The deadline for signing picks from this year's draft was midnight on Friday.
Alvarez got a $6 million signing bonus, and the Pirates agreed to pick up the remainder of his college costs since he won't return to Vanderbilt for the senior year of his baseball scholarshp.
The Pirates could not come to an agreement with second-round pick Tanner Scheppers, a righthanded pitcher from Fresno State who has had shoulder problems. They will get a bonus pick in next year's draft since Scheppers didn't sign.
Alvarez is projected as a potential impact player, a third baseman with power. I'll have more coverage in Sunday's Mirror.
