Egan reels in big fish

May 30, 2008 - Neil Rudel

Score a home run for Rob Egan, host of Front & Center, the two-hour daily sports radio show in Altoona and State College.

"Eeegs" delivered maybe the most accomplished media member in the show's two-year history Friday with the appearance of guest Peter Vescey.

Vescey has been a lead columnist on the NBA for more than two decades, commenting for the New York Post and now NBC.

Egan used the Maurice Stokes connection to hook Vescey, timely in that NBA-TV is airing a special on the former St. Francis wonder.

You don't land guests like this without a lot of persistence. Joe Shuta, host of ESPN Radio's "Leading Off," delivered the Boston Globe's Bob Ryan a couple of years ago.

Vescey and Ryan are two of the giants of the sports media profession.

It shows these guys appreciate small towns -- and started somewhere themselves.
