Homerism at its finest

March 5, 2008 - Neil Rudel

If you were disconnected from the Bishop Guilfoyle-Serra Catholic game, it was an especially entertaining listen.

Rich DeLeo and Cal Bragonier, of course, were all over the call for ESPN Radio 1430.

The duo presented how well the Marauders were playing, and when their lead swelled to double-digits in the third quarter, Bragonier proclaimed the potential victory would be "the upset of the season."

Gradually, though, BG's lead began to slip away. The was some criticism of decisions, the players' and the coaches for not calling timeout sooner, but the real venom, not surprisingly, was reserved for those in stripes.

DeLeo, annoyed by the District 5 crew, pointed out the last time BG played a playoff game at UPJ, it was outshot from the foul line by Windber 29-0. Now that's an incredible statistic in which Guinness -- the record book, not the beer -- might be interested.

They were also aghast at how the Serra fans were complaining, too.

Bragonier kept bemoaning how Serra was outshooting BG from the free-throw line; the final count was 22-2. Bragonier also hoped the evaluation process knocked the crew out for longer than the remainder of the playoffs.

"These guys [referees]," he said, "shouldn't get a game the rest of their lives."

Here's hoping the Courtside Crew has recovered in time for tonight's girls game.
