Let me tell you about this guy: I met him in 1982; he took me under his wing while I was starting at the Beaver County Times.

We sat side-by-side during the days I covered baseball for the Times. I benefited from his experience and enjoyed his sarcasm. In fact, I have a picture of the two of us interviewing Scoop Oliver in the Dodgers' dugout at Three Rivers Stadium. Another time, a high pop foul disappeared out of site and then suddenly smashed down between us.

Upon return to the Mirror in '83, Mehno came along as a stringer and became a feature part of our sports section, providing stories and columns on the Pittsburgh scene. These were the days before laptops became popular, and I used to take Mehno's stories by dictation.
