Socialism is not what’s spreading hatred

Everyone and their brother are now experts on socialism and warn us repeatedly that America is on the verge of a socialist takeover. Why?

Well, it is due to the fact that a couple of people claiming to be socialists were elected to serve in the capitalist’s government.

Do these people not see how entrenched in power the ruling capitalist class is? Do these people actually believe that an old man like Bernie Sanders or a young woman like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are going to overthrow the entire capitalist state that exists to defend the profit system? Where is Joe McCarthy when you need him?

In actuality, while some sit around worrying about an imaginary socialist threat, there is a real threat and it is posed by the fascist right-white racialists, white supremacists, white nationalists, Nazi skinheads and other mad dogs.

If you are able, name one socialist who perpetrated an act of gun violence, a bombing, or a mass shooting in this country.

On the other hand, people influenced by the ideology of the fascist right or alt-right have carried out numerous acts of terrorism.

In the 1960s, a Klan supporting racists bombed a church, claiming the lives of five black school girls.

In 1979, in Greensboro, N.C., a death squad composed of Klansman and Nazis murdered five anti-racist labor rights activists in broad daylight and got away with it.

White power freak Timothy McVeigh bombed the federal building in Oklahoma City, claiming many lives including children in a daycare center. In Charleston, S.C., Dylan Roof, a white supremacist, murdered nine black members of a church there.

In Pittsburgh, an anti-Semitic lunatic gunned down 11 members of a synagogue last year. In Charlottesville, Virginia, a white racist drove his car into a group of anti-racist protesters, killing a young woman and injuring others.

In El Paso, Texas, an immigrant-hating lunatic executed 22 people at a Walmart.

Concerning American socialism, it is a small percentage of the political spectrum in this country. It is based upon western intellectual traditions — economics, history, philosophy, anthropology and the struggle to win rights for workers of every color.

The fascist right is based upon irrational conspiracy theories, right supremacy, anti-immigrant bigotry, anti-semitism, unscientific racist notions, and hate.

There can be no comparing the two, and it should be clear who the real threat to American values is.
