Legislature needs to reject bailout
It is inexcusable that Pennsylvania lawmakers are considering a massive, taxpayer-funded bailout worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year for nuclear power plants.
According to PJM Interconnection — our regional electric grid operator — Pennsylvania will have enough power generation even if the state’s aging, inefficient and still profitable nuclear power plants are shut down.
In addition, new, clean-burning natural gas power plants are coming on line. These modern power plants are competitive and cost-effective. Why should Pennsylvanians pay extra to maintain obsolete, 20th century technology?
I will be closely watching what action my Pennsylvania legislators take on this issue.
Harrisburg lawmakers need to demonstrate their common sense and support for everyday Pennsylvanians by swiftly rejecting any bailout proposal.
