More than few hunters oppose deer culling

In response to the article that was printed on April 1, I would like to inform the public the “real” truth about how the majority of hunters and landowners feel about the culling of 2,000 deer in Blair and Bedford counties.

Three comments in this article caught my attention.

– The Pennsylvania Game Commission executive director acknowledged that hunters have a mistrust in the PGC.

– PGC Commissioner Tim Layton said “only a few hunters are holding up the plan” (the plan to oppose the PGC on deer culling).

– Layton also said: “for us to counter what literally seven, eight, nine or 10 are doing to get on camera is just…” I can assure that no one is doing anything just to get on camera, for the most part, people as a whole do not like being on camera.

A sportsmen’s group has formed called Sportsmen for the Future, and it currently has over 6,000 members. That is “only a few” according to Layton. Personally, I am not speaking for every hunter nor every landowner. But I can assure you that there are thousands of people that are totally opposed to culling these deer.

It does not matter if they are hunters or not. For any game commissioner to make such statements as Layton, it only indicates to me that he is completely out of touch with the hunters, sportsmen and landowners in this state. This is a perfect example of why so many people do not trust the PGC, a mistrust that as Director Burnhan’s admitted to in his comments. I am a 57-year-old lifelong hunter and sportsman.
