Wrong assumption to blame Democrats

I am writing in response to the letter submitted by Wendy Geesey titled “Elect those who will help to protect you.”

Aside from the fact that the writer offers no evidence that Democrats support putting anyone in harm’s way, she appears to make false assumptions.

The first is that undocumented immigrants are more likely to commit violent crimes. Both documented and undocumented immigrants commit all categories of crimes at rates lower than native born citizens.

The second is that Republican candidates are somehow better suited to protect us.

If Ms. Geesey believes that current immigration policies are to blame for the death of Mollie Tibbetts, she may want to lay the blame on the 2013 Republican majority House that would not bring the border security, economic opportunity and the Immigration Modernization Act of 2013 bill up for a vote.

That said, as the Tibbett family has expressed, it is disgusting to use the tragic death of that young women to promote one’s political agenda.
