Friend’s life finally went up in smoke
My best friend died today in a nursing home. She smoked two or more packs of cigarettes a day for 60 years.
As I visited her this past week, I watched as she gasped for each breath. She coughed and almost choked on her secretions.
Her weight had dropped to 70 pounds.
Even with stents, the circulation in her legs was so poor, she could no longer walk to the bathroom. She became incontinent.
She didn’t want to get a shower because the water hitting her legs caused her so much pain.
Our time we could have spent together in retirement years she spent as a shut-in.
In her final days, as she gasped for each breath, she still begged for a cigarette.
I watched as her life went up in smoke.
Finally, she is at peace.
